Beyond the Blinkers: Discovering the Infinite Within

Like a horse with blinkers, we see only a narrow track. This essay shows how to widen the gaze and discover the infinite that was always within.

Existence is not what you think it is. What you call your “life” is mostly just a collection of memories and projections. You see the world through a thick pair of blinkers made of your desires, your fears, and your cultural conditioning. Because of this, you only see what is convenient for you to see. True discernment – the ability to tell the real from the unreal – is about taking those blinkers off and looking at the world with a fresh pair of eyes.

Most of us use our intelligence to avoid pain and seek pleasure. We think that’s being smart. But if you only look at the surface of things, you will always be caught in a cycle of suffering. Discernment is the first and most important step on the path of liberation. It’s not just about “thinking carefully.” It is about looking so intensely that the illusions start to peel away.

The Trap of Appearances

When you start to look deeply, you realize that your mind is constantly lying to you. It tells you that a certain person is your enemy, or that a certain object will make you happy forever. But if you pause, take a deep breath, and look again, you might see that your “enemy” is just a person struggling with their own drama, and that your “precious object” is just a piece of plastic.

This depth of sight reveals a new world. It makes you ask questions that can shatter your comfort zone. For example, why do you think your waking life is “real” while your dreams are “unreal”? When you are dreaming, it feels 100% real. When you wake up, that world vanishes. When you go to sleep, this world vanishes. Neither one is permanent. So, why do you cling to one as if it were the ultimate truth?

The Real and the Transient

If you continue to look deeply, you will notice a staggering distinction. Everything in this physical world is transient. It begins, it changes, and it ends. It is an interconnected web of cause and effect. Your body, your thoughts, your emotions – they are all part of this temporary dance.

But then, there is the “you” that is watching the dance. This witness doesn’t seem to change. Whether you are six years old or sixty, that core sense of “me” hasn’t aged a day. This unchanging part of you is what we call the infinite self. It is real because it is eternal. Everything else is “illusory” in the sense that it is a passing show. It’s like a movie on a screen: the movie changes every second, but the screen stays exactly the same. Discernment is the ability to see the screen instead of getting lost in the movie.

The Hero’s Path

I always say that this path is for the brave. Why? Because when you look too deeply, you might realize that the “you” you have spent forty years building is just a collection of borrowed ideas. Most people find this terrifying. They would rather live a shallow, superficial life than face the truth of their own insignificance.

But for those who have the courage to persevere, the rewards are immense. When you experience reality unfiltered, the fear of death simply vanishes. How can you be afraid of death when you realize that the core of who you are was never born? Stress and anxiety disappear because you are no longer trying to control the uncontrollable. You are immersed in a state of bliss that doesn’t depend on what happens in your bank account or your relationships.

Realization over Talk

There is a huge difference between reading about a tropical island and actually being there. Most religious and spiritual people are just reading the brochure. They talk about doctrines, they build temples, and they argue about books. But as many great seekers have said before me, religion is not about talk. It is about realization.

If there is an ultimate reality, you must experience it. You must feel it in your bones. You don’t need faith; you need a clear eye. Throw away your blind beliefs and start your own investigation. This is the only way to find something that can satisfy you fully.

Practical Steps for Clarity

If you want to cultivate this penetrating sight, you have to be methodical. You can’t just hope for it; you have to engineer it.

1. Quieting the System: Most people’s minds are like a bucket of muddy water. If you keep shaking it, you will never see the bottom. You have to let the bucket sit still. Through regular meditation, you settle the silt so the water becomes clear. 2. Neutralizing the Gaze: You must learn to look without “liking” or “disliking.” The moment you label something as “good” or “bad,” you have stopped looking at it; you are only looking at your label. To discern truth, you must be a neutral observer. 3. Active Deciding: When you see things as they are, without the fog of your emotions, your decisions become effortless. You don’t have to agonize over choices; you simply do what is needed.

The New “Me”

The practice of discernment eventually leads to a total transformation. The old, superficial “you” that was always worried about what people thought or whether they were “winning” at life starts to fade away. In its place, a new “me” emerges – a real “me” that is grounded in the eternal.

This is the most important journey you will ever take. It starts with a simple look and ends with you discovering that you are not a separate, limited creature, but an expression of the infinite. When you reach this realization, the world looks completely different. You are no longer a victim of existence; you are the master of it. The “crest jewel” of discernment is what allows you to cut through the nonsense and live a life of absolute freedom.
