Beyond the Ladder of Goals: The Cosmic Game of Hide and Seek
We climb ladders that lean on nothing. This essay reveals the cosmic game beneath our goals - and the freedom beyond them.
I want to talk to you about the “four categories of meaning” that we often mistake for a spiritual to-do list. We have this idea that we have to “balance” our lives between making money, having fun, being a good citizen, and seeking enlightenment. We treat these like four separate plates we have to keep spinning in the air. But if we look at them through a more discerning lens, we see that they are all just different ways we try to answer the same question: “How can I be happy?”
You see, a “goal” is a very slippery thing. If someone tells you that your goal should be “liberation,” but you are perfectly happy with your new sports car and your collection of rare stamps, then liberation isn’t your goal. It’s just a word. You can’t force a horse to drink if he isn’t thirsty. The thirst must be internal. Your goals are determined by what you feel is lacking and what you value.
The Meaning of Wanting
There is a fascinating ambiguity in the language of the ancient masters. The word they use for “wealth” also means “want” and “meaning.” This tells us something profound. We only pursue what we think will add “meaning” to our lives. If we think a million dollars will make our lives meaningful, we pursue wealth. If we think a sunset will do it, we pursue the sunset.
The ancient texts aren’t interested in mandating your behavior. They are like a mirror. They describe the truth, they show you the benefits of waking up, and they show you the perils of staying asleep. But whether you choose to open your eyes is entirely up to you. There is no hurry. The universe has plenty of time for you to make all the “wrong” choices until you finally decide to try a different way.
The Three Finite Paths
Most of us start our search for happiness in the “finite” world. We look at Possessions and Security. We think that if we have enough resources, we can control our environment and keep the suffering at bay. This is a very logical way to live. Wealth is a means to an end.
Then there is the path of Delight. We are sensory beings. The connection between pleasure and a sense of “well-being” is obvious. So we chase the “highs.” But as we all know, the “high” always comes with a “low.” The pleasure is finite, and because it is finite, it is “mortal.” It dies. And when the pleasure dies, we suffer.

As we grow a bit more thoughtful, we realize that we need a “Right Way” to manage these two. We can’t just be greedy and hedonistic without consequence. We need a life of Moral Harmony. Honesty and responsibility aren’t just “rules” to please a grumpy god; they are practical tools that make the pursuit of wealth and pleasure less disastrous. Living the “Right Way” adds a level of value and stability to our existence.
The Waking Up from Bondage
But eventually, for the “spiritually awakened,” the whole theater of the world starts to look a bit transparent. They see the “subtle bondage” that underlies the whole human experience. They see that even the most “moral” person with the “most” money and the “best” pleasures is still trapped in a cycle of change and loss.
To these people, the only thing that has any lasting value is Freedom. They don’t want a “better” dream; they want to wake up from the dream altogether. They realize that the only way to find “unending and irrevocable” happiness is to step out of the world of “parts” and into the world of the “whole.”
The Infinite Bliss
The ancient wisdom is very clear: “There is no bliss in anything finite. Only the infinite is bliss.” Everything that has a beginning has an ending. Your body, your thoughts, your bank account, your house – they are all finite. They are all “mortal.” If you try to build your happiness on them, you are building on sand.
We spend our lives trying to overcome the “ordinariness” of life by inventing new ways to be entertained. We are in an unending, exhausting struggle to conquer boredom. In this state, we think money and pleasure are the answer. But they are just “finites” trying to fill an “infinite” hole.

The Transcendent Discovery
When you start to value the “Right Way” over simple greed, your mind is getting cleaner. You are starting to see the structure of the game. And when your heart is purified by this harmony, you eventually reach the state that transcends everything – both the “right” and the “wrong.”
This is the realm of the Infinite Self. It’s the discovery that the happiness you’ve been looking for was never “out there” at all. It was the “You” that was doing the looking. You are the source of the bliss. You are the infinite. And once you realize that, the “four goals” stop being a struggle. You realize that you’ve been at the “ultimate state” all along, but you were just too busy playing the game of “goals” to notice the player.
Summary of the “Meaning Map”
To help you anchor these thoughts before your reading, keep this “Alan Watts” progression in mind:
| The Value | The Motivation | The Realization |
|---|---|---|
| Worldly Success | Security and Resources | It is finite and cannot last. |
| Sensual Delight | Direct Pleasure | It is mortal and leads to “lows.” |
| Moral Harmony | Stability and Protection | It purifies the mind for the next step. |
| Total Freedom | Ending the Bondage | True happiness is found only in the Infinite Self. |
